The St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary is the volunteer organization of the hospital. Founded in 1951, their mission is to support and enhance the hospital’s capacity to meet the healthcare needs of the people of Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico.
St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary, a volunteer organization founded in 1951, began with 17 members. Today 180 active members provide a variety of services to CHRISTUS St. Vincent and St. Vincent Hospital Foundation.
Auxiliary members donate more than 36,000 hours annually to the hospital. They staff the hospital’s information desks, the gift shop, surgical waiting rooms, library and coffee carts, and greet and escort patients and hospital visitors. Furthermore, their community support extends far beyond the walls of the hospital. Each fall, members coordinate the Cozy Coats program for school children; in December 2017 members collected and delivered more than 1,200 coats to elementary schools in Santa Fe.
Through proceeds from hospital gift shop sales, the Auxiliary raises funds for multiple hospital and community-based projects. Since its inception, Auxiliary members have donated nearly $5 million in cash to support hospital projects and health care in our community including a scholarship program to support continuing education for clinicians, fetal monitors, and equipment for operating rooms and the Wellness Center. Members have also provided funds to remodel hospital waiting rooms and build new patient rooms.
Auxiliary members’ contributions to CHRISTUS St. Vincent and the Santa Fe community are broad sweeping, and include the following additional initiatives:
Members hold clothing drives that benefit thousands of hospital patients annually. Some patients lack appropriate clothing when they are admitted to the hospital, and auxiliary members help provide necessary items of clothing upon a patient’s release.
Volunteers annually create thousands of craft items for hospital patients of all ages, including stuffed animals, tray favors, bags that attach to walkers, and baby hats and blankets.
The Auxiliary sponsors the hospital’s pet therapy program by ensuring pet owners and pets are properly registered, trained, and in compliance with hospital and Auxiliary policies. The pet therapy program at CHRISTUS St. Vincent is robust and brings joy to many patients.
In 2016, Auxiliary members were honored by the New Mexico Hospital Association’s Auxiliary/Volunteer Service Salute to Excellence for their Interpreter on Wheels (IOW) program. St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary purchased 22 of the IOWs that are now in use at CHRISTUS St. Vincent, thereby greatly improving caregivers’ ability to communicate with patients.
At its April 20, 2017 Annual Awards luncheon, St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary celebrated its 65th anniversary. Several Auxiliary members were honored for 40+ years of service and several others for 20+ years.
BECOME A VOLUNTEER
St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary welcomes new volunteers! To get started, you will need to attend a hospital tour session (Schedule TBA). At the end of the tour, you will be advised of specific volunteer opportunities. The Auxiliary is always in need of individuals to work in the gift shop, particularly on weekends, but other opportunities may also be available.
If you are interested in any of the specific need areas, you will be given an application to complete and return.
All volunteers must have a TB test that will be administered at no cost at CHRISTUS St. Vincent.
Volunteers will be required to take a flu shot each fall.
Volunteers must also complete annual hospital compliance training that is provided by the Auxiliary.
If you are interested in volunteering with St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary, please call (505) 913-5714 or email Auxilians@stvin.org.
The hospital gift shop is one of the most important functions provided by Auxiliary members. Annually, revenue raised from sales enables the Auxiliary to support specific needs within the hospital such as birthing chairs, bassinettes, etc.
